it is 5:00 in the east. we begin with this massive deadly storm socking the east coast with storm and ice after wreaking havoc cross nearly half of the country. >> you name it, it's done it. thousands of flights were canceled this weekend and hundreds on hold today. many of the flights in dallas/ft. worth. a huge hub slammed with cold weather and ice. travelers have been stuck there for days waiting for their flights to be rescheduled. this morning alone, more than 700 flights there have been canceled. heavy snow is causing problems at washington, d.c.'s airport. if you're flying today, we feel for you. beyond that, probably a good idea to call your airlines. >> absolutely. if you're picking somebody up at the airport, call ahead. this snow leading to massive pileups including the one we are showing you me racine wisconsin. 60 crashes officials say in that area on sunday. at least one person killed and

dozens others were injured. those driving and ridings in cars and buses on interstate 94 say conditions were simply horrible. >> you could barely see down the road. i was on my phone. next thing i knew, i looked up and just swerving through cars, dodging cars and we ended up in the ditch. >> there were also wrecks in missouri. a chain reaction crash on interstate near kansas city leaving a person and a child critical injured. seven cars and a tractor-trailer were all involved in the accident. across the country, at least seven people have died in storm related incidents. oh! oh, my gosh! >> wow. imagine how terrifying to witness that. sheets of ice literally flying off the rooftops in north texas. that scene in plano where ice collected for days because of the storm system we had. >> oh, my! >> it was some two inches thick

when temperatures started to rise and melt and it simply slid off. amazingly, no one was hurt. some cars were damaged, though. as for those who saw it happened, they say it was frightening! >> my dog started barking and i heard the ice starting to break away from the roof. you could hear it. don't walk on the sidewalk, anybody! >> those are some amazing pictures! >> the sounds is just chilling. just chilling to hear that. oh, my goodness. indra petersons is watching this storm. have you ever seen anything like that? >> i have not being a west coaster. what we are dealing with several days is another system making its way through. a little bit of dusting of snow in manhattan and new york but that is not the story. south of it we continue to see this icing. stretching back in through virginia this morning. so that is the concern. all of the flight delays. once you have freezing rain that is never a good thing for flying so definitely check those flights. we are looking for larger amounts around roanoke,

virginia. notice extending all the way even in through new england, of course, there will be more of a wintry mix. a mix of ice and snow. also concern. you could have ice ri roadways covered by snow so definitely be aware as you're driving and take the extra time today. off the lake we could see lake-effect snow 3 to 5 inches of that expected. two systems. one we are dealing with right now continue to freak havoc in the morning. notice in the south, another low making its way up. overnight tonight in the early hours watching football

some of the stuff through. in the meantime, we could see a federal budget before the week is out. house and senate negotiators are set to close a budget deal the first in two years. . "the washington post" says it would roll back some of the cuts and take action to reduce the deficits. overall it may not be the grand bargain some were hoping for. negotiators have been trying to find common ground since october as part of the grooemted thagre end the government shutdown. so south africa. the nation and the world gather to remember nelson mandela. sunday was a national day of prayer in south africa with millions paying their respects to the former president. the preparations are now under way for a memorial service that will bring dozens of world leaders, including president obama, to south africa starting today. robin kurnow is outside mandela's home this morning. you've just spoken to one of his closest confidants. what did she say?

>> we are hearing for the first time what is going on inside this house behind me. the home where nelson mandela died. we have been seeing a lot of people coming outside in the past few days laying flowers, paying their respects. we understand according to african tradition, nelson mandela's wife is sitting on a mattress in the living room in the lounge and receiving people throughout the day. she will be essentially sitting in that position welcoming visitors and there are a lot of visitors. political leaders, friends. people from across south africa that have some sort of importance and they are coming to pay their respects to the widow. we are also hearing from mandela's closest assistant who has worked for him for nearly 20 years, and she gives us some sense what have it's like inside.

>> sadness in the house but celebration i almost want to say. people are celebrating his life. they are grateful there and people are coming who haven't seen seen each other for years. that is the incredible thing people getting together again each in these days. >> he was suffering, i understand, quite a lot in those last few months. is there a sense of relief perhaps is the wrong word, that he is at least free from that? >> yes, well, the family make sure he wasn't through any pain through the doctors of course, and he wasn't suffering but he was such an independent person. he was such a proud person that it must have been difficult for him. so it is -- it is, in a way, it is -- he had to come at some point. >> what was it like when you saw him for the last time?

>> at the time, i didn't, but at the time, i made sure i said the things that needed to be said. >> do you think he heard you? >> yes. >> reporter: okay. bringing together people even in this and, boy, oh, boy, are we going to see it at tuesday on this memorial service. we hear from south african authorities that already 91 current heads of state have confirmed their attendance. ten former heads of state will be there, as well as 71 other eminent persons, royalty and leaders and that sort of thing. at the moment it's looking like it's going to be the biggest ever memorial service/funeral we have seen in recent memory. i was at john paul, ii funeral in rome a few years ago we know 70 heads of state were at that. already it's beating john paul, ii. i think princess diana and these are the biggest funerals in the

at negative 30 degrees. we keep talking about the ice. look at the snow. philadelphia saw about 8 inches and new york saw a little bit of dusting of snow yesterday. the system is still in place this morning. the bigger concern is the icing. south of new york and going through virginia we have that threat of ice. the bigger concern today especially right out towards roanoke where they could see a quarter of an inch. they are talking about delays thanks to freezing rain currently being reported in that area. so definitely check your flights if you're heading to that region. snow is still out there, but primarily in new england today. dusting coming off the lakes. we will be watching for nap this is what i was talking about these deadly temperatures this morning. we were talking about windchills that feel like negative 30 degrees. definitely concern this morning. you can see that cold arctic air in place and expecting to stay here for severled. notice new york only about 34 degrees as your high today. even if you add in the windchill we are talking about 20s in new york and d.c. 34 and cincinnati 27.

mandela's home in johannesburg. the singing and dancing and memorials grow. the archbishop said the greatest memorial for mandel are the people and what we are seeing. what they call the rainbow nation here. so many different nations and faces and faiths joining in song and remembrances in honor of nelson mandela. not since john paul, ii departed have we seen energy like this around the world. billions of members in the catholic church. for nelson mandela a politician and to get this attention, people streaming in and flooding to try to get to south africa is unheard of. now the big moment will be the memorial tomorrow when they are going to pack the soccer stadium here that was big enough for the world cup but 90,000 seats not even close for all of the people who want to come. i think the message is clear you're hearing. nelson mandela was a man but he was also much more than that

here and abroad. >> i probably had a chance to talk to some of the people. you talked about the rainbow nation. it cut across black and white and cut across generations. the impact i'm sure you're getting a real sense of it being among the south african people? >> and it's the context. remember, apartheid literally meant apart neighborhoods. they were segregated, white, black, southern, indian, categories. to see the reverse of this, this beautiful mixing going on here and everybody has the same message. there is loss, but there is reference and a responsibility a word we haven't used much yet looking forward to the future. you hear a lot of that work undone and needing to do better and come together more. it really is something to behold and see. you'll see behind me the nate of the faces. most of this is not media. the cameras are coming but the people who are here in full

the thrill of it. police say 18-year-old miranda barber and her 22-year-old husband elliott lured a 42-year-old man with a craigslist ad promising his female companionship. they strangled him and left him in a car last month. they went to a walmart to buy supplies to clean it up and then went to a strip club. >> they told us they intended to kill somebody together. they had tried to kill other individuals and failed and this happened to be one that actually worked. >> police say miranda barber insists that her husband was not involved and she acted alone and that she blacked out and doesn't remember what happened. both are due in court later this month. a famous hiker due in a denver court today facing domestic violence charges. aaron ralston who cut off his

arm to escape a canyon in utah became the subject of the film "127 hours." he was arrested on saturday night at his home in denver on assault and wrong's to minor charges but details of what happened have not been released. heart is backing out of a concert at seaworld as a result of a film called "black fish" on cnn. they posted a note on twitter saying their concert in february has been canceled. a spokesman for the park says it respects decisions by heart and willie nelson to not perform blaming, quote, a small grup of individuals denying their fans a concert. after a glimmer of hope 11 more whales have been found dead in florida. they are believed to be part of the pod stranded in the everglades last week. 15 appeared on tuesday and appeared to be headed for deeper waters but for some reason they turned around and headed back to shore.

welcome back to "early start" everyone, it is money time which means alison kosik is here this morning. >> stock futures are higher this morning after the dow on friday had its best day in two months. the dow rocketed 198 points. close at 16,020 after a better than expected jobs report for november. so far this year, gosh what a year. the dow is up 22%.

nasdaq is 35%. the s&p 500 up 27%. it's okay to go ahead and look at that 401(k). you the average return on the s&p 500 is about 8%. today investors are watching how sales for mcdonald's did in november. they will also be listening for any new information about a looming federal reserve decision to cut back on its 85 billion dollar month bond buying program. three fed presidents will speak later on today. stay tuned for a potential budget deal. that could come as early as this week. the big economic report coming out, retail sales for november. that will be relieved thursday. the gap in what people earn is growing fastest among 35 to 44-year-olds and according to bankrate.com. the gap grew 21% from 1992 to 2012 and more than any other age group. the most troubling aspect in this, according to bankrate is
